Newsletter – April 2015

The unexpected but very welcomed glorious weather, brought with it lots of opportunity for the Under 5s to play, learn and have fun outdoors. Most of the attention was focused on our back garden, which is slowly starting to come to life after the winter. The children have had lots of fun preparing one of the raised beds ready for planting vegetables, and our new little greenhouse is now full of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and other fruit and vegetables.
Each child has also planted their own pot of potatoes, which they will then take responsibility for watering and looking after. Over the summer holiday, the children will also be able to continue looking after them at home and enjoying the fruits (or potatoes!) of their labour! Our barrel pond is also water tight and the children had lots of fun filling it with both water and plants.
In April, we were also joined for an evening by Jo Chandler, our Early Years Advisory Teacher, who talked to parents about how to support pre-schoolers to learn letters, sounds and the skill of writing. As parents, we’re often eager for our children to be able to write before attending school, however, for a 3 or 4 year old to be achieve this, there is so much more to it than just picking up a pen one day and being taught how to form letters! In order to write, children need to strengthen muscles in their shoulders, arms and hands, have flexible fingers and thumbs and develop the necessary fine motor skills. A child who is made to write before their shoulders, arms, hands and fingers are ready, will struggle to write and have problems with pencil control.
So, when our children are having fun painting with water, carrying buckets, playing with play doh, sweeping and squeezing pegs, they are not only enjoying themselves, but at the same time we are helping them to develop all the necessary muscles and skills for writing.
Finally, don’t forget our Yatton Keynell Village quiz on 16th May. This is the first in what is hoped to be an annual village event, and will see teams from across the village coming together for a fun night out! Get together with friends in your street, those who you run with, are in a book club with, or simply just socialise with, and join us. We’re looking for teams of 4 – 6 people, with tickets £5 per head to include a cheeseboard. For further information, email
